What will it cover?

This workshop explores men’s mental health through the lens of stigma, identity, and vulnerability. It creates a safe and supportive space to reflect on how societal expectations, language, and traditional ideas of masculinity can influence emotional wellbeing and help-seeking.

Men’s mental health is often critically impacted by stigma and cultural norms that equate masculinity with strength, self-reliance, and emotional silence. As a result, many men experience anxiety, depression, or stress while feeling unable to speak openly about it. This session invites participants to reflect on what it means to be a man in today’s world, and how vulnerability, strength, and identity can coexist.

The training aims to:

The workshop aims to build participants’ confidence in engaging in meaningful conversations about mental health — both their own and others’. Through discussion, reflection, and practical skill-building, attendees will develop tools to manage their wellbeing, recognise when support may be needed, and feel more empowered to foster a culture of openness and empathy in their families, workplaces, and communities.

By the end of the session, participants will:

  • Explore what is meant by men’s mental health and how gendered expectations can shape emotional wellbeing
  • Increase understanding of stigma, language, and cultural barriers that may prevent men from speaking openly
  • Gain an overview of common mental health issues, including prevalence, signs, symptoms, and impact
  • Reflect on identity, masculinity, and vulnerability — and how these concepts can coexist in healthy ways
  • Build confidence in recognising when support may be needed and knowing how and where to seek help
  • Develop and practise listening skills and supportive conversation techniques (including asking, listening, and responding)
  • Learn practical tools and sustainable strategies to manage stress and support personal wellbeing
  • Feel more confident supporting other men and role modelling healthy behaviours
